Water Pump Replacement in Castro Valley, CA at Mallard Auto Care

At Mallard Auto Care in Castro Valley we provide full range of automotive maintenance and repair services. Water pump replacement is among the services we offer.

Water pump replacement can be performed either as a stand-alone service or in conjunction with timing belt replacement.

In order to prevent engine damage from overheating, water pump must continually circulate coolant to the radiator, whenever the engine is turned on. Typically, manufacturers recommend water pump replacement after 7-10 years – check the owner’s manual for the time interval specific to your vehicle. If you can’t find the owner’s handbook, or are not sure, call us. Our service advisors will be glad to look up this information for your particular vehicle.

So Why Does the Water Pump Need to be Replaced?

A water pump is subject to a number of stresses – both thermal and mechanical. As a result, many things can go wrong. Coolant leaks may develop because bearings and seals will wear out over time. Even a small leak should be a cause for concern – it indicates that the water pump is starting to fail. If there is a serious leakage from the “weep hole” – definitely time to replace the water pump. If you hear loud noises from the water pump bearings, have it checked out by a professional mechanic.

At Mallard Auto Care we recommend replacing the water pump either because of the passage of time, as recommended in your owner’s manual, or along with the timing belt replacement.

The reason to replace the water pump during the timing belt replacement is that a large part of the water pump replacement cost is in the disassembly of various components, so we can get to the water pump itself. During timing belt replacement, these components are already disassembled, so you will save labor cost. It also happens that given the typical driving distance during a year, the time it takes your vehicle to travel the distance of 100,000 miles that typically calls for a timing belt replacement is very close to the 7 years or so that many manufacturers recommend for water pump replacement. During the water pump replacement, we will also check cooling system thermostat, and we will also check condition of the hoses – they get brittle with age, and likely will need to be replaced as well to avoid coolant leaks.

So if you are concerned about the condition of your vehicle’s water pump, or the time interval has passed, bring your vehicle to our auto repair shop – our friendly service advisor will greet you and make you feel at home, and we will take care of your vehicle as if it were our own. Driving without air conditioning on a hot summer day is horrible. There are different reasons your Subaru’s AC might stop working, one of which is when it needs a refill. A simple ac recharge may be all you need to get the AC blowing cool air again. Your Subaru’s air conditioning system uses a highly specialized refrigerant gas to keep the vehicle cool. Depending on the age of your Subaru, it may be R-134a or for newer cars, the R-1234YF refrigerant. At Mallard Auto Care in Castro Valley we have equipment to handle either type of the refrigerant – whatever your Subaru needs, we have it ready. In theory, your Subaru should never run out of the refrigerant, but like any system, the AC system can develop leaks. This can cause the refrigerant to drop very low. When this happens, the system has to be recharged with refrigerant for it to function properly again. How to know your Subaru’s AC needs a recharge Here are common signs that your Subaru’s AC system may need a refill: • Blows warm air When the AC system is low on refrigerant, it blows warm air from the supply vents. Since the cooling effect depends on the amount of refrigerant available, low level of the refrigerant will cause the system to blow warmer air. • AC compressor clutch doesn’t engage When you switch on your vehicle’s AC, the compressor clutch ought to engage for the system to work properly. If the refrigerant level is too low, the AC compressor clutch may not engage. • Visible leaks Leaks are a reason for low refrigerant levels, but you can tell that your AC needs a refill before it gets critically low by looking out for any sign of liquid around the compressor, lines, or inside the cabin. In this instance, the leak has to be fixed before the AC is refilled. If you suspect low refrigerant levels in your Subaru, it is best to let a professional mechanic inspect the system for leaks, and have them repaired before ac refill. At Mallard Auto Care we are experts at a/c system diagnostics and repairs – so if your Subaru is not keeping you cool, give us a call or make an appointment online.
