Professional technicians at Mallard Auto Care use such state-of-the-art digital equipment to diagnose check engine light problems. Check engine light can be illuminated by, literally, hundreds of different conditions. It takes experience, extensive training, and latest digital tools to professionally diagnose your vehicle and get to the root cause of the check engine light.

What Should I do if the Check Engine Light comes “on”?

There are three scenarios that you should be aware of, because they necessitate different response:

  1. First, the easiest case, is if the check engine light is illuminated, but not flashing, and the car is running normally. In this case you can drive your car home, then call us for an appointment. You have a few days to get your car diagnosed. However, if you should take weeks or months to get it checked out, chances are that you are damaging your vehicle.
  2. The second scenario is if the check engine light is illuminated, steady illumination, however the engine is running rough. In this case, if you are near an auto repair shop, you should take your car to that shop. If you are far away from a shop, it’s safer to have your car towed (Have you renewed your AAA membership?). Driving with check engine light on and engine running rough can result in expensive repairs.
  3. If the check engine light is flashing on-and-off, stop as soon as it is safe to do so, and have your car towed to Mallard Auto Care. This is the most severe scenario and can result in very expensive repairs if not taken seriously.

What causes the Check Engine Light to illuminate?

There are literally hundreds of conditions that can cause the check engine light to come “on”.

The top five causes are:

  1. Faulty gas cap – yes, it happens, and quite often. It’s your lucky day if this is the cause of the check engine light.
  2. Failing spark plugs – replacing spark plugs and wires will fix the problem. Relatively easy and relatively inexpensive check engine light repair.
  3. Failed mass airflow sensor - easy to diagnose and relatively inexpensive to repair.
  4. Failed oxygen sensor – timely oxygen sensor replacement will keep your vehicle’s catalytic converter from failing.
  5. Catalytic converter failure – this one hurts you pocketbook, but if it fails, you will have to have it replaced, or your vehicle will not pass the smog test.

Most of the time, if you do not luck out with the faulty gas cap, you should take your vehicle to a professional auto repair shop to have your car diagnosed by experienced technicians with professional diagnostic tools.

Driving without air conditioning on a hot summer day is horrible. There are different reasons your Subaru’s AC might stop working, one of which is when it needs a refill. A simple ac recharge may be all you need to get the AC blowing cool air again. Your Subaru’s air conditioning system uses a highly specialized refrigerant gas to keep the vehicle cool. Depending on the age of your Subaru, it may be R-134a or for newer cars, the R-1234YF refrigerant. At Mallard Auto Care in Castro Valley we have equipment to handle either type of the refrigerant – whatever your Subaru needs, we have it ready. In theory, your Subaru should never run out of the refrigerant, but like any system, the AC system can develop leaks. This can cause the refrigerant to drop very low. When this happens, the system has to be recharged with refrigerant for it to function properly again. How to know your Subaru’s AC needs a recharge Here are common signs that your Subaru’s AC system may need a refill: • Blows warm air When the AC system is low on refrigerant, it blows warm air from the supply vents. Since the cooling effect depends on the amount of refrigerant available, low level of the refrigerant will cause the system to blow warmer air. • AC compressor clutch doesn’t engage When you switch on your vehicle’s AC, the compressor clutch ought to engage for the system to work properly. If the refrigerant level is too low, the AC compressor clutch may not engage. • Visible leaks Leaks are a reason for low refrigerant levels, but you can tell that your AC needs a refill before it gets critically low by looking out for any sign of liquid around the compressor, lines, or inside the cabin. In this instance, the leak has to be fixed before the AC is refilled. If you suspect low refrigerant levels in your Subaru, it is best to let a professional mechanic inspect the system for leaks, and have them repaired before ac refill. At Mallard Auto Care we are experts at a/c system diagnostics and repairs – so if your Subaru is not keeping you cool, give us a call or make an appointment online.

With the first rains of the season behind us, you will have surely noticed whether your windshield wipers need replacement. Windshield wipers used to be an afterthought, but modern vehicles require windshield wipers to be in pristine condition.
