120,000-mile service in Castro Valley, CA at Mallard Auto Care

At 120,000 miles, your vehicle is entering a critical phase in its life. While the 120k service is considered an intermediate service, it's a big milestone where more parts are due for replacement, and there’s a higher chance that issues will need attention. Living in Castro Valley and Hayward, with their hilly terrain, puts additional strain on your car, particularly on parts like brakes and tires. As your car gets older, manufacturers recommend more extensive checks to ensure your vehicle stays in top condition for the long haul.

This service is designed to keep your car running smoothly for years to come, and our ASE-certified technicians will carefully inspect and service key systems. If any urgent repairs are needed, we’ll address them immediately to keep you safe on the road. Your car is at the point where proactive maintenance is key to avoiding costly issues down the road.

The 120,000-mile service is considered an intermediate service, but your car is older now and has traveled a considerable distance, so you can expect more parts will need to be replaced, and there is an increased probability that we will find things that need to be fixed. Castro Valley and Hayward have hills, which further increase wear on parts of your car, like brakes or tires.

At this point in your car’s life, manufacturers recommend considerably more checks than at the 60,000-mile service, and we will perform more extensive inspections to make sure that you can safely go back on the road.

Here are some of the things we will be checking for and likely performing when you bring your car for the 120k mile service:

  • oil and filter change (we recommend synthetic oil for most cars)
  • brake fluid replacement
  • engine coolant replacement
  • transmission fluid replacement
  • spark plug replacement
  • timing belt replacement (if applicable)
  • valve adjustments if applicable
  • replacing the cabin air filter
  • rotating tires
  • replacing the engine air filter
  • visually inspecting the brakes, hoses, belts
  • checking for any fluid leaks
  • manufacturer recommended safety inspection
  • steering component inspection
  • strut or shock absorber inspection

We will check all of the things listed above, and more, and let you know if there is anything that needs to be repaired right away (key aspect being safety or likelihood of a major breakdown). If the issues we find do not require immediate repair, we will monitor them for you when you bring your car for other services, oil change, etc.

While this list may seem long, the good news is that after so many miles, your car has proven to be a trusted friend, and the 120,000 miles service will keep it humming and happy for many more miles.

If your car has been well maintained, the 120,000-mile service is like a “middle age” checkup – we want to find and fix things that need fixing, but for many cars, we expect they have another 120,000 miles ahead of them. So if you have any concerns about your car – let us know!

If your car has passed the 120,000-mile mark and has not been serviced, please schedule an online appointment here, or give us a call. We will have you back on the road in no time.

Driving without air conditioning on a hot summer day is horrible. There are different reasons your Subaru’s AC might stop working, one of which is when it needs a refill. A simple ac recharge may be all you need to get the AC blowing cool air again. Your Subaru’s air conditioning system uses a highly specialized refrigerant gas to keep the vehicle cool. Depending on the age of your Subaru, it may be R-134a or for newer cars, the R-1234YF refrigerant. At Mallard Auto Care in Castro Valley we have equipment to handle either type of the refrigerant – whatever your Subaru needs, we have it ready. In theory, your Subaru should never run out of the refrigerant, but like any system, the AC system can develop leaks. This can cause the refrigerant to drop very low. When this happens, the system has to be recharged with refrigerant for it to function properly again. How to know your Subaru’s AC needs a recharge Here are common signs that your Subaru’s AC system may need a refill: • Blows warm air When the AC system is low on refrigerant, it blows warm air from the supply vents. Since the cooling effect depends on the amount of refrigerant available, low level of the refrigerant will cause the system to blow warmer air. • AC compressor clutch doesn’t engage When you switch on your vehicle’s AC, the compressor clutch ought to engage for the system to work properly. If the refrigerant level is too low, the AC compressor clutch may not engage. • Visible leaks Leaks are a reason for low refrigerant levels, but you can tell that your AC needs a refill before it gets critically low by looking out for any sign of liquid around the compressor, lines, or inside the cabin. In this instance, the leak has to be fixed before the AC is refilled. If you suspect low refrigerant levels in your Subaru, it is best to let a professional mechanic inspect the system for leaks, and have them repaired before ac refill. At Mallard Auto Care we are experts at a/c system diagnostics and repairs – so if your Subaru is not keeping you cool, give us a call or make an appointment online.
